This framework 10x'ed my odds of success...

I came out of Uni thinking I was going to be the best programmer in the world. I was naive. Within 2 years of working hard at this company, I was let go - and I was their best engineer. “Budget cuts“.

That’s when I decided that I don’t want to be beholden to someone else to decide how far I go in life. I don’t want to be beholden to this arbitrary “manager“ figure to give me a raise. I want to do it myself.

So I had two choices:

  • Be an even better engineer

  • Be an average engineer, salesperson, copywriter etc.

I chose the latter.

This is called Skill Stacking. You layer on multiple skill and each additional skill multiplies your odds of success.

Think about it this way: a doctor who makes $1M a year but has 0 understanding of how stocks work is worse off than somebody who makes $250K a year and understands compound interest. You would be surprised how true this statement is. It makes sense because studying to become a doctor takes ALL of your time. You don’t have time or brain space to learn something that won’t help you get closer to becoming a doctor.

If I was you, I would spend my time becoming average at many different skillsets. That’s the thing, you don’t have to be an expert, you just have to know enough not to be terrible.

  • Learn how to become more productive

  • Learn how body language works and how you can read people (and influence their decisions)

  • Learn how to write clearly

  • Learn how to control your mind

  • Learn how money works

Learn how to be a generalist, not a specialist and you will 10x your odds of success.

  • I’ve started to work closely with the first 10 users and boy the feedback is both brutal and useful - exactly what I need.

  • The plan is to make the first 10 people successful before marketing the product more.

That’s it for today. Seeya next Friday!
